Best Country of Sub-Saharan Africa – Botswana

I think Botswana - it's most prosperous country of continental Sub-Saharan Africa "Botswana - Driving Sustainable Growth " video taken from Botswana's economy is stable and well-managed with low rates of inflation. The country offers a stable workforce, good industrial relations and competitive labour costs. In addition, a good transport infrastructure and modern telecommunication system lend to the attractiveness of doing business in the country. Furthermore, the country enjoys a reputation as the least corrupt country in Africa with high transparency and a well-developed legal system. Minerals, especially diamonds, have been the mainstay of the country's economy since independence from the British in 1966. The country's high rate of economic growth is due largely to this mining sector, which accounts for 90% of national foreign exchange earnings, and at nearly 40%, provides the single largest source of GDP as well as government revenues. Despite continued challenges such as HIV/AIDS, small market size and landlocked location, Botswana, already one of Africa's wealthiest nations with a thriving economy based on diamond mining and tourism, remains one of the best investment opportunities in the developing world

  • I agree with you 100%, Botswana is in better financial shape than a lot of European countries, strangely they got there by NOT blaming the white man. It is a lesson I hope other African countries can learn, but know that they won't. Oh well… I guess I'll just invest in Botswana then, sorry Mugabe!

  • vusomujo being literate has nothing to do with english. Our language is Setswana and almost everyone in Botswana can read and speak Setswana fluently.

  • Good business opportunity there. Very low tax. This country could become the Singapore of Africa.

  • Compare to Western countries crime there is moderate to low, and not high as you are claiming. It's safer there than in your average US city.

  • @vusomujo You are nothing but a sad liar! There are many hard working and decent people in this country who have created this attractive investment and tourism destination. We hope that one day you tell people why you hate Botswana so much. The good work of the citizens of this country won't be denied by people like you. It's there to be seen and the expatriates coming in are joining a good country built by its people!

  • Botswana is not in the middle of South Africa, it's in the middle of Southern Africa. South Africa is another country in Southern Africa

  • Botswana's competitive advantage is not permanent and its subsequent description  as 'Africa's miracle' is both false and misleading. A seriously demoralized public service workforce, highly indebted citizens, poor work ethics, numerous incomplete government-funded national projects (power-generation, stadiums, dams etc), high cost of living, escalating youth unemployment,  HIV/AIDS, political patronage, boot-licking, high levels of violent crime,  hostile immigration policies, securocracy, nepotism, political intolerance, collapsing beef industry, militarization of the civil service, fear, poverty, deteriorating national examination performance, extra-judicial killings, narcissism and endemic corruption have effectively stalled Botswana's economy to a standstill. Botswana's future is bleak.

  • Have any other African countries been able to borrow any ideas from Botswana that have improved their country?

    CrowdPleeza July 20, 2014 3:54 am Reply
  • Well done Botswana. I do feel that comparing countries that have 2 million in population to those that have 25 million or more, such comparisons are silly. Obviously when you have more mouths to feed things get harder, Namibia and Botswana are obviously beautiful in terms of infrastructure and quality of life however they don't even have up to 5 million people put together.

  • Botswana did not get built by colonialists like a lot of other infrastructurally better African countries. It was built by Batswana from the ground. Fortunately the country happened to be rich in mineral and other resources and had people that were bent on doing things for the good of the people and country. Now, unfortunately, as with many other countries the world over, there has been a moral decay from outside that wove its way into society and leadership, and while the country could do much, much better financially, it has just had a lot of luck to keep its success.

  • Ummm….no. Botswana may be fairly well off economically but you're runaway HIV rate (25% in the adult population) points to moral bankruptcy. Basing "best" on gdp or some other economic measure is a very European way to do things. But hey you're last two presidents have been either European or married to one so I guess that's how you think. But sorry The Gambia beats Botswana as do many other African countries.
