Deadline: September 4, 2023
The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund 2023 is now accepting applications from researchers in sub-Saharan African institutions and the University of Cambridge. This funding opportunity aims to support collaborative research projects and strengthen research collaborations between African and Cambridge-based researchers. With a track record of 300 awards granted to date, this fund has facilitated engagement between Cambridge researchers and colleagues from 34 African countries, enabling them to pursue significant funding opportunities and make impactful contributions to their fields. The upcoming round also welcomes applications from North Africa, opening up new possibilities for research partnerships.
Funding:
The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund offers competitive grants ranging from £1,000 to £20,000. The funding can be utilized for various research-related purposes, including covering research costs (such as reagents, fieldwork, and equipment), facilitating research-related travel between Cambridge and Africa (considering the feasibility in light of COVID restrictions), and organizing research training activities in Africa, such as workshops and courses. These grants provide valuable financial support to researchers, enabling them to advance their projects and foster long-term collaborations.
Eligibility:
Applicants must apply as pairs, consisting of researchers from the University of Cambridge or affiliated institutions (such as the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, NIAB, and British Antarctic Survey), as well as researchers from universities or institutes in sub-Saharan Africa. Both applicants should hold a post-doctoral level position or higher and must have the endorsement of their respective Head of Department or equivalent. Additionally, both applicants must have a formal link to a research group, department, or faculty in their home institution, and it is expected that they remain employed beyond the completion of the ALBORADA awards. While the awards are primarily intended to support researchers, limited support for students may be considered if it strengthens the relationship between the Cambridge and African Principal Investigators.
Application Process:
To apply for the Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund, applicants must complete the online application form, which has been designed to facilitate collaboration between the Cambridge and Africa-based researchers. The Cambridge-based applicant must register using their @cam.ac.uk, @sanger.ac.uk, @babraham.ac.uk, @bas.ac.uk, or @niab.ac.uk email addresses. Once registered, they can log in to the application form and invite the Africa-based applicant to register and collaborate on the forms. The online platform allows applicants to update, save, and eventually submit their application electronically, streamlining the application process.
Conclusion:
The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund presents a unique opportunity for researchers in Africa and Cambridge to establish or strengthen research collaborations. By providing financial support and fostering connections between scholars across disciplines, this fund has played a significant role in advancing research and facilitating access to additional funding opportunities. Researchers are encouraged to take advantage of this funding opportunity by submitting their joint applications before the September 4, 2023 deadline.
