In a world where media literacy is more important than ever, this prestigious award aims to highlight the exceptional contributions of educators and news organizations who have gone above and beyond to ensure that students grasp the significance of journalism and the challenges faced by those in this profession.

Background:

The Global Youth & News Media Prize first introduced the Press Freedom Teacher award in 2021 as part of its News/Media Literacy category. This award was created to acknowledge the remarkable efforts of frontline teachers who imparted knowledge about the importance of quality journalism to their students and shed light on the risks faced by journalists worldwide. The inaugural recipients of this honor were Janis Schacter (USA), Marisabelle Bellido Terán (Bolivia), and Olawale (Ibrahim) Gbenusola (Nigeria). The awards were dedicated to the memory of Scott Schurz (1936-2021), a passionate advocate for press freedom and youth engagement on both local and global levels.

Eligibility:

The Global Youth & News Media Prize 2023 welcomes nominations from educators at the primary or secondary level of instruction, teaching in any type of class and institution. Self-nominations are accepted, as well as nominations made by others who recognize the remarkable contributions of deserving individuals. News outlets, organizations representing journalists or news organizations, and NGOs that support these groups are also eligible to enter. It is expected that organizations will self-nominate themselves for consideration.
